The Rivendell arpeggios cloud over as more visitors arrive. "It's a darker version of that opening," notes the composer. Soon the

score dabbles in significantly grimmer tones, previewing the musical palette of Mount Doom. Elrond details Isildur's long-ago

refusal to destroy the One Ring and the music bursts into a passionate rumbling of brass chords and rolled timpani before the

arpeggios return again, gloomier yet, dulled by disappointment.

Later, the second appearance of the Evil Times motive in the Cor Anglais greets Aragorn and Boromir as they meet over the

shards of Narsil. The wilting phrase foreshadows the suffering the Ring will soon bring, as Boromir suspiciously examines the

shattered blade.

"The shards of Narsil, the sword that cut the ring of Sauron's hand. It's still sharp... but no more than a broken heirloom."

The blood of NĂºmenor is beginning to fade. It was because of men that the Ring survived... I was there Gandalf... I was there, three thousand years ago... I was there when Isildur took the ring from Sauron's hand. I was there when the strengh of men failed.

"Your Isildur's heir, not Isildur himself."

That is the Evil Times motif, it also appears in in the EE in a fragmented statement as Wormtounge is shown riding to Isengard.

@jediking12 I've been looking everywhere for the piece that starts at 2:45. Weird that I find it on this track yet it's nowhere to be heard on the other parts of the score where it comes up in the film. The two other places I hear this music is when Gandalf is trapped on Orthanc and sees all the trees being ripped down, and in TTT when Frodo and Sam stop for a lembas break and find that they can't get closer to Mordor... Are there any tracks I can hear that piece that I might have overlooked?

Aragorn oftheDunedain

Elrond: It should have ended that day, but evil was allowed to endure.... Isildur kept the Ring. The line of Kings is broken. There is no strength left in the world of men. They are scattered, divided, leaderless. Gandalf: There is one who could unite them. One who could reclaim the Throne of Gondor.

Aragorn oftheDunedain

Elrond: Men? Men are weak. The race of men is failing. The Blood of Numenord is all but spent. Its pride and dignity forgotten. It is because of men the Ring survives. I was there, Gandalf. I was there 3,000 years ago. Isildur took the ring. I was there the day the strength of men failed.... (Isildur, hurry! Follow me.) I lead Isildur into the heart of Mount Doom. Where the Ring was forged, the one place where it could be destroyed. (Cast it into the fire! Destroy it! No... ISILDUR!!!)

Aragorn oftheDunedain

Elrond: The time of the elves is over. My people are leaving these shores. Who will look to when we have gone? The Dwarves? They hide in their mountains seeking riches. They care nothing for the troubles of others. Gandalf: It is in men that we must place our hope.
