Here we sing a wonderful old song about whaling in the Pacific. Obviously we've all been doing that for many a year (!), but regardless of your background this is a stirring song, and a pleasure to sing. Hope you like it!

The Longest Johns are based in Thornbury, Bristol, and are a folk band specialising in traditional working songs and shanties. (They sometimes do other songs they like too, but don't tell anyone.)

It's danm tough life full toil and strife we whaler men under go,and we don't give a danm when gales is done, How hard the winds did blow!for we'er homewardbound from the artic grounds with a good ship taught and free. And we won't give a danm when we drink our rum with the girls of old Maui!Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui,We're homward bound from the artic grounds,Rolling down to old Muai.Once more we sail eith the northerly gale to the ice and wind and rain,Them coconut fond, them tropical shores, we soon shall see again. For six hellish months we passed away on the cold Kamchatka sea,but now we're bound from the artic grounds, Rolling down to old MauiRolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui,We're homward bound from the artic grounds,Rolling down to old Muai.Once more we sail with the northerly gale, towards are island home. Are whaling done, are mainmast sprung, and we ain't got far to rome. Our stuns'l booms is carried away what care we for that sound,A living is after us,- thank god, we're homward bound.Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui,We're homward bound from the artic grounds,Rolling down to old Muai. How soft the breeze through the island trees, now the ice is far asrern.them native maids, them tropical glades is awaiting our return,Even now their big brown eyes look out hoping some fine day to see,our baggy sails run'n for the gales, Rolling down to old Maui!Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui,We're homward bound from the artic grounds,Rolling down to old Muai.Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui,We're homward bound from the artic grounds,Rolling down to old Muai.

This is one of my favorite sea shanties, Rolling Down to Old Maui or simply Old Maui. This rendition is by The Longing Johns.

Lovely! I found you because The Creepy Bard sang this song recently after leaving the snows of New York and going to balmy Florida. You should look at his videos to see the "native girls" down in old Florida. He sings this song in one of his many personas, pirate William Morningwood (he has a very nice voice & uses a faster tempo; being solo, he doesn't have your beautiful harmony). But you'll enjoy it.
