Strangers on a Train (aka Voices Calling) is the third and final album by The Left Banke. It wasn't released until March 1986. The album was recorded by a reformed line-up of the band, featuring three of the original five members: Steve Martin, Tom Finn, and George Cameron. Although the album was released in 1986, it had actually been recorded some eight years earlier in 1978.

Two songs taken from the album recording sessions ("Queen of Paradise" b/w "And One Day") had been released as a single in late 1978 but had failed to chart. The single's lack of success resulted in the album being shelved and the reformed band broke up again shortly afterwards. Strangers on a Train was eventually released in the U.S. by the West Coast rock and Grateful Dead specialist label, Relix Records. It was issued in Europe by Bam-Caruso Records with a rearranged running order, under the alternate title of Voices Calling.

I've been a big LB fan since day 1. I never heard this song before. I think it's great. Is there somewhere I can buy it?

I love this song. Another gem by a great band that has no equal. Amazing just so ahead of their time.

The Left Banke sounded great last night at the Howard Theater in Washington. If the band enjoys their music and wants to keep touring, I say charge ahead, gents! The only suggestion I'd make is to have the advance people get the advertizing word out better...a LOT more people should have been there last night!

Hi Tom. Do you think you could post a video of the BB King performance? I currently live in Bermuda and would like to see!! Also, I should say that I bought Voices Calling when it first came out and it's always been one of my all-time favorite albums!! I especially liked "Lorraine" and "And One Day"! Oh! Did you write the string parts for "And One Day"?

Like Big Star and Badfinger... Pure pop genius songwriting that few got. Brilliant! Thank you for this!

What a great song. Sounds like the Beatles but I know it is the Left Banke. Something to truly be proud of.

If the Beatles had been still going at it in the late 1970s, quite possibly this is what they would have sounded like.

In all seriousness, this is a great song. The Left Banke came in same time as the British Invasion of the 60s and their sound was more akin to that influence than what was going on in america at the time. This song proves that point..very Beatles influenced vocals and guitar wise.

i have this album. suddenly I am hearing this with new ears..terrific.the vocals are outstanding, with a lusher production this song would have fit right in on "too".

Both, and some musicians perfected their songs for months and years back then as well. I don't know exactly how long Brian Wilson used on "Good Vibrations", but it took months. However you don't necessarily need a lot of money and studio - time to do so these days. I'm impressed that this song was done in only one session. To my ears it sounds great the way it is.

This is great the way it is, but if you had more time in the studio to work on the album it might've been even better. It must have been very frustrating.
