I have no fear of death, it brings no sorrow, but how bitter will be this last farewell. For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly....

So sad . . . that England . . . that wonderful island that shaped the world . . . those amazing, valiant people . . . all gone.  Socialism, mud people and pansy white liberalism killed it.  Good lesson for Amerika.

This incredible song tells a haunting and touching story.  It's quite moving to this Navy retiree, who spent 3 1/2 years on a destroyer during his service.  Fortunately, I never had to experience the "taste of war," and have the utmost respect for those who did.  Thanks for this post ionlift.  I really enjoyed it.

Beautiful song.  Sometimes we have to say goodbye to someone we love in a different country from ours  for whatever reason and go to our own land.  It reminds me of that American girl I had to leave as I had to return to Guatemala.

this song reminds me of Tynemouth - I don't know why - but always loved it. And it also makes me think of Durham town - visited both places recently

There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbourTomorrow for old England she sailsFar away from your land of endless sunshineTo my land full of rainy skies and galesAnd I shall be aboard that ship tomorrowThough my heart is full of tears at this farewellI heard there's a wicked war a blazingAnd the taste of war I know so very wellEven now I see the foreign flag a raisingTheir guns on fire as we sail into hellI have no fear of death; it brings no sorrowBut how bitter will be this last farewellThough death and darkness gather all about meAnd my ship be torn apart upon the seasI shall smell again the fragrance of these islandsIn the heaving waves that brought me once to theeAnd should I return safe home again to EnglandI shall watch the English mist roll through the dell

I've ALWAYS loved this beautiful piece of music.  The first time I heard it was on KFRC in San Francisco in 1975.

"The words of one song, The Last Farewell, could have been Grandad speaking to Ayesha as he prepared to cross the river and fight life’s final war with pain: I have no fear of death, it brings no sorrow, but how bitter will be this last farewell. For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly, more dearly than the spoken word can tell.” (From: The Revelations)
