Sold Me Out

I always knew that they'd get me somehow sooner or later,

But with a bullet in the head, a knife in the back,

Not a pocket calculator.

Sorry mister, you're all wiped up,

You're all washed up,

Sold you out.

Got no dreams, got no ambition,

Can't decide, 'cause there's no decision,

Got no claim to any position,

Can't compete with the competition.

You're always complaining,

It's so depressing,

But if you're old enough,

Start to confess it.

You say, you sold me out,

To get a better deal for yourself,

You sold me out,

And now we want some of your precious wealth,

Because you sold me out.

Sold me out,

Sold me out,

Sold me out.

You sold me out,

To get a better deal for yourself.

You sold me out,

And now it's every man for himself.

Work all your life, put the money in the bank,

Sign on the dotted line.

Try to draw it out, the joke's on you,

Put up the empty sign.

Sorry mister, we're all sold out.

Sold me out,

Sold me out,

Sold me out,

Sold me out.

You, I'm talkin' to you.

You sold me out,

To get a better deal for yourself.

You sold me out,

And now we want some of your precious wealth.

And sell you out,

Like you sold me out.

Are you in so deep, that you can't get out?

Got no dreams, got no ambition,

Can't decide, 'cause there's no decision,

Got no claim to any position,

Can't compete with the competition.

Sold me out,

Sold me out,

Sold me out,

Sold me out.

This IS the Golden Age of the Kinks, in my opinion. Their '60s stuff was excellent, but I don't do wistful, angst-ridden songs very well. The later stuff had a cynical, hard edge to it toward which Dead End Street only hinted. The critics can go pound sand - I never based my tastes on what someone else thought, because quite frankly what most people think is bloody useless.

@lgbpop I like the 80's Kinks material. But I also understand that critics have to criticize. While the songs you mentioned are really good, especially Living On A Thin Line, they don't truly compare to the Golden Age of The Kinks. I always liked when critics would give The Kinks a bad review by saying these albums were ok Kinks albums, but if they were done by someone else they would have been fantastic. The Kinks outdid themselves and were penalized because they were good.

I took my name from this song. I obviously love it. Got no dream, got no ambition, can't decide, cause there's no decision, got no claim, to any position, can't compete, with the competition. Great lyrics.

Critics hate the 1980s Kinks material, but IMHO it's some of their best. Art Lover, YoYo, State of Confusion, Ling on a Thin Line, Definite Maybe, Little Bit of Abuse, Do It Again, Destroyer.....sue me, I like straight-ahead, no-holds-barred rock music and this was as good as it got......I kinda wonder what the music would have sounded like if Jim Rodford had stepped in at bass when John Dalton left. Rodford and Avory were dynamite together and State of Confusion is proof of it.
