Fantastic rock song......I think it was equivalent to a huge single that would be a million/million seller. Such great stuff, I'll never tire of this song.

They had as many top 40 hits if not more than the Beatles and Stones. And I love both of those bands. But the Kinks songs didnt get in the top 10 . Ah-well , still just as good in my opinion

Ray Davies was/is a visionary you can apply almost all his lyrics to any time period, they resonate 40/50 years later. This track could have been on Who's next or even physical Graffiti, it has a bit of both the who and zep about it imo!

I've always believed that Ray Davies is a genius, but I've never been as clear as I am today. The Kinks are probably the first band in rock and roll history to talk about postmodernism and its consequences in society, and without doubt, are one of the bands that were more aware of what was happening in the world, beyond the Vietnam war and drugs. While the Beatles, the Stones, the Who and other bands were in their hippie wave (maybe with the exception of Pink Floyd) The Kinks wrote songs about individualism, stress, social fatigue, anorexia, anxiety, nostalgia and fear. They reflected in such a unique and original way the daily life of the British working class as they warned us about globalization, consumism, the loss of identity and the destruction of the past. They were ahead of their time, and to this day, nobody seems to notice it.The Kinks deserve a lot more recognition than they have.
