Fantastic. Just fantastic. Been aware of Hanna's work since the Bikini Kill/Huggy Bear split LP in '93 but this is the first time I've heard The Julie Ruin. She's an incredible songwriter because she's actually got something to say.

brilliant video and song. idk if i've already said this but i think kathleen's songs and lyrics do more for feminism than anything i've heard, she had a somewhat rough background and a super keen sense of that injustice, then has the courage to tell it while being demonized for doing so, (stay in your place missy) kathleen has an enviable strength most people can only wish they had, and she has this amazing ability to tell that story thru music. as a man i always supported women's movements in general thinking i understood a woman's struggle, but not until listening to a number of kathleen's songs did i really understand what was bubbling underneath, the forced submission, the objectification, the indifference to a woman's sacrifice... the subjugation. i forget who said it, i think it may be a line from martin sheen's character in the west wing, said in a pitiful way, "the things we do to our women."

God I wish I'd known about Bikini Kill & Kathleen Hanna's music before now. The Punk Singer has made her into my new hero, and I'm sad I didn't get to grow up with Bikini Kill like I did Nirvana. It would have done me good to listen to them to balance out all the Tori Amos I was listening to. Maybe I would've been more of a fighter and less of a sad Ophelia!My only complaint is that this video doesn't let us see the performance of the band! Kathleen's stage presence is magnetic and goes a long way towards conveying the power of the lyrics. Though getting to focus on the lyrics is good too, as they're especially powerful here.

What is the reason this doesn't have a million views yet? Kathleen Hannah is so inspiring speaking out through her music. i just feel so happy to have stumbled upon Punk Rock Singer on Netflix and have a chance to hopefully catch a show. Hmm, maybe people dont promote because they want to see shows in smaller venues. I don't know. Or maybe me thinking she is genius is not a view shared by everyone. I wonder where she is most well known and respected - I think I would want to live near those people.
