actually, it WAS a blank. there was a real bullet that was a misfire lodged in the gun barrel from earlier usage that wasn't cleared. the blank dislodged it, and lodged it in lee's chest. probably doing more damage since it would have been tumbling instead of rifling/spiraling the way it should have. this is one of a few incidents around the same time that lead to the eventual cessation of actual gun use on sets. the other incidents being actor stupidity caused fatalities.
