No 35 The Jam – Butterfly Collector. This makes it into my little chart, even though I'm probably being a little arty-farty in not picking some of the more obvious Jam classics, but there's a nice distilled purity of malice to this which contrasts beautifully with the raw anger of A Bomb in Wardour Street and is not yet tainted with the overly produced sound of much of the Jam’s later output and certainly that of the Style Council. I think I know what the song is about, but like a great number of rock classics I'm not sure and I don't really care as it's the tone rather than the substance that really makes this piece. The video I have picked is one that shows us the lyrics because it’s often fun to discover that the words you’ve been singing all these years are totally wrong and didn’t really make any sense. With hindsight it seems more than a little stupid to have thought that the acquisition of a small claim would bring you into cost basis but I had merely thought that Paul might have been pissed off with somebody’s accountant. I actually prefer my version which states “You just don’t care ‘cos you’ve got no brain” and will defiantly continue to use it as I sing along and wash the dishes.Again in this case simplicity of structure is key to why the song is so damn catchy. Slow haunting verse, slow haunting verse, fast vitriolic chorus, slow haunting ...The change from slow haunting to fast vitriolic is magnified by the change from clear single string lead guitar of the verses to the louder rhythm chords of the chorus. Finally there is good news for the much-maligned target of the lyrics as I had thought that “the bit between your legs, has blown off” was what had happened. I’d rather lose the appeal than the whole apparatus. I just can’t shake the suspicion that this song isn’t really about lepidoptery ...www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9Whn2eQGSM

Is it 'you can't light a fire', or 'you can't nine to five'?. It's a wonderful song anyway.
