Weller wrote this song as joke to mock the other big selling artists of the time to prove that the kinds of songs written by them were easy to write. He more or less proved his point as this song reached No.2 in the UK Charts when it was released.

When I first heard this song back in the day, it instantly became one of the best things I'd ever heard. It still is. Pure poetry.

Cant help thinking he's talking about breaking up the jam and leaving his mod routes as he gets older a la the 21st chapter of 'A clockwork orange' where alex grows up and gets interested in marriage and 'normalness'. Or is he talking about his sexuality ? Not sure Amazing song though, I was well into Weller in my teens but just getting back into him now. What a songwriter, the best behind Lennon/McCartney in my opinion.
