I PRESENTED THEM ON THIS PROGRAMME, MY NAME IS LEILA WARING. BUT LOVED JOY DIVISION TOO. IAN CURTIS WAS A WARM, FRIENDLY AND APPROACHABLE LAD, WISH I COULD HAVE SAID THE SAME ABOUT PAUL WELLER. HE SULKED AND TUTTED, WHILST I FUMBLED MY WAY THROUGH 10 RE-TAKES, INTRODUCING THEM. PRICELESS ! THANKS, LEILA

I'll preface this by saying I like Paul Weller and The Jam. But holy cow, Joy Division on the same show on the same night was probably a little too much for The Jam. They probably had to crank up their sound several notches up. Joy Division, whose sound was nothing like what everybody else was already doing at that time -- dark, gothic, post-punk, poetic -- just couldn't be matched. They followed no one; they structured their songs the unconventional way rarely having choruses; they experimented with instruments and technology; they were beyond all and influenced many.
