Since when "Long Cool Woman" was their most famous song? I would say "Bus Stop" and "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" deserve that title.

This a great song, and people know only "long cool woman in black dress"

The atmosphere you describe brings back so many memories of that era, and atmosphere. In many ways raw by todays comparison, but so fresh and simply good fun.

I just want to be at some underground London scene small intimate bar, lights dimmed nice and low, and The Hollies playing this song live with every foot in the place tappin' and movin'! I'M ALIVE!

The Hollies were mostly unrecognized in the U.S. until around 1966, but had several chart hits in the U.K. before then. Here's one from 1964 (#7 U.K.).

One of the best and most under rated of the Hollies early singles. It simply flows melodically. the vocals all fit exactly right. They should have tried more like this one albeit they had several memorable hits.
