How come nobody knows who The Hold Steady are? They are amazing! The lyrics are, well, not deep, but very intelligent. The music is very well written. It's just so amazing! Whenever I show someone one of their songs (it's usually this one, or Little Hoodrat Friend) they are never impressed. It's kind of sad.

At first, I kept hearing "I'll probably just go and get myself a gun again." I like mine better. Much darker, gives it a new layer.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I guess it's not really that they sound alike in an outright manner, but more that they share some stylistic elements that make them similar and bring the older band to mind when you hear the younger playing. It's not really something concrete. That's why I said that maybe your ear needed a little more development. For instance, Craig Finn is a very wordy vocalist and the Hold Steady has a piano in the mix, which brings to mind Springsteen even if they lack sax.

How much development can it possibly need. :) I mean, I'm not trying to transcribe the solos or anything. It's just that Springsteen has this really cool big band sound & the HS has a more power chord melody/rhythm deal. Is it a power chord thing? Because everyone uses power chords & nobody says the steady sounds like Green Day for example. If you can tell me specifically what it is, I'd be grateful. But I think it's a myth, like all Talyor Swift songs are about ex boyfriends.

It's funny. Everyone says the Steady sounds like Springsteen but I just don't hear it. They say the same thing about Oasis and the Beetles.

For some reason this song makes me think of the song "I Came for You" by Bruce Springsteen. I love this band - their sound is sick and their lyrics are both soulful and intellectual. How often do you get that combination?
