excellent canadian garage track...

for the benefit of ylaski, i couldn't find a printed copy of lyrics but i think below is roughly right. if anyone can correct anything feel free. the odd word varies in versions and i'm sure i've heard an extra verse on one.

Walking down the street, on a foggy night...

Saw a young girl standing under a light...

Her face was pale and her skirt was tight...

Had a five dollar bill, I felt alright...

If I had my car, I would go for a drive...

I had no car but I had my five...

Walked over to her, said what's your name...

My names Mary Jane, I live down the lane...

I looked down the lane, at the end I could see...

A room full of clowns looking back at me...

A line of executives formed to the right...

And if I'd stayed, I would have stood all night...

She opened up the door, and said go on in...

I walked in first, pulled down the shades...

She said take it easy, don't be afraid...

You got nothing to lose, you're at a penny arcade...

This was the very first "45" record I ever bought. I grew up in a Canadian Government housing project and they played this at our annual Field Day weekend out in the Back. I was around ten and thought they were the coolest thing that hit the stage besides the Rolling Stones. You can get it at itunes which for this old guy is cool as hell. My friends and i would play this over and over and air band the bejeevers out of it.

Probably the best band to come out of Montreal ever the Haunted. They almost had a number one song with this one,it was rising up the charts but a song by the rolling Stones was released and went to number 1 within days

I listened to The Haunted on a white plastic radio that my late sainted mum got for me using Steinberg's food store stickers! (I'm old).

Another great Montreal band from the 1960's. Better than most of the crap on the radio these days!!

I'd only heard The Chesterfield King's version before now. I surmise this is the original version. The C. Kings version is good but this is even better. BTW, they have a Wikipedia page, The Haunted (Canadian Band).

I do not remember ever hearing of them. I see they were out of Montreal, Canada. Did they have much popularity in the USA?

You know what, I suspected this song had something to do with scoring a 5 dollar sack of herb which is literally unheard of these days, which is why I didn't immediately catch the reference. You won't see those prices in Canada or the States ever again lest you get it for free; obviously long before my time. "My name's Mary Jane I live down the lane." I guess the "Penny Arcade" refers to a peep show or somethin...

The lyrics are tantalizing, and the beat is very groovy.
