The Green Leaves of Summer

John Wayne's The Alamo (USA 1960)

Lyrics:

A time to be reapin', a time to be sowin'.

The green leaves of Summer are callin' me home.

'Twas so good to be young then, in a season of plenty,

When the catfish were jumpin' as high as the sky.

A time just for plantin', a time just for ploughin'.

A time to be courtin' a girl of your own.

'Twas so good to be young then, to be close to the earth,

And to stand by your wife at the moment of birth.

A time to be reapin', a time to be sowin'.

The green leaves of Summer are callin' me home.

'Twas so good to be young then, with the sweet smell of apples,

And the owl in the pine tree a -winkin' his eye.

A time just for plantin', a time just for ploughin'.

A time just for livin', a place for to die.

'Twas so good to be young then, to be close to the earth,

Now the green leaves of Summer are callin' me home.

'Twas so good to be young then, to be close to the earth,

Now the green leaves of Summer are callin' me home.

There is no more sacred ground in any universe, not even the tomb in which Christ was interred and from which he rose from the dead. I cannot set foot there without being overcome with emotion. My country and my freedom were born there. No flag will ever stir my heart like the Great Lone Star Flag. That flag is my heart.

It's a pitty that some will remember this song from 'Inglorious Basterds' and not for 'The Alamo'

Just discovered this evening that Paul Francis Webster wrote the lyrics to the Dimitri Tiomkin music. This after learning that the same man wrote the lyrics for the original "Maverick" TV series with James Garner and Jack Kelly. I'd never hear of Mr. Webster but he had quite a career winning 3 Academy Awards with 15 nominations. Why is he dust in the wind?

This movie was probably the worse directed, the worse acting (widmark, Boone, Harvey) the most over the top "ra ra ra" but if I were to die tomorrow, I'd want to see this film before I went, to me it is the greatest movie, not just that all are killed but all the great character actors collected here, all are gone
