Pigpen is singing lead, Jerry is harmony. all thru the fillmore acid test jerry and pig's microphones were sporadically not working. that is why you hear only Jerry. The complete film of "the acid test" is on youtube. search "merry Pranksters Acid test."

The main singer that you hear IS Jerry Garcia, indeed Pigpen is singing here but he's singing backup, I mean just listen to the dominating voice it's obviously Garcia's voice.

@djmoore20041 you couldn't be more wrong, this band if anything is underrated musically. you obviously haven't done any research on the dead and checked out more of their music. this song really doesn't show what the dead are like.
