I couldn't disagree more but we all get out of music what we get out of it, right? There's no right or wrong. I love both bands. Cheers. :-)

Well, yes, results evidently vary. It clearly depends on the heart being aimed for. The Smiths always struck me as having a rather narrower emotional range, as if they had listened to one aspect of the Go-Betweens and decided to make a whole career out of it.

Morrissey reviews "Part Company" by the Go-Betweens: "It is a mad, indescribable joy to listen to words with depth, scope and thought. The Go-Betweens' mood here is tremulously sad, and it is their best record. Produced carefully by John Brand, The Go-Betweens have waited some considerable time for national acclaim. Their time has come. Listen and learn." (1984)

This to me is one of their most stellar songs. Even the Smiths couldn't quite hit the heart as directly as the GBT's could (but only because they sometimes aimed slightly for the funny bone instead).

@ Papdog, it isn't a breaking up song at all. It's about getting a visa to leave Australia for England ( or something similar). 'Her handwriting' is HM Customs.

One of the greatest breaking up songs in modern music history
