THIS is the version I grew up, not Neil's. This has so much more energy! These guys played at our HS graduation bash just about the time this came out (June 1970). Too bad they didn't have a longer career.

My buddy had this 45 and we played the crap out of it, before Neil's was played over our locals. We first heard it over CKLW, "The Big 8". I thought I was losing my mind, trying to remember who in the hell did this song before Neil!! Thanks YouTube! I am glad my mind is now right.

I gotta say, back in the day WBCN in Boston played the crap out of this and it rocked, dare I say regionally it was the first version of CG you might've heard before Neil's. This was the good ol' days of FM without commercials unless it was for Stop,Look & Listen record store or the local hippie clubs. This is the real and 1st commercial version, Neil's was wimpy compared. So what he wrote it? Remember - Without You, sung by Nilsson? Written by Badfinger - compare the two.

In those days, they made their money from recordings, thus the small venues and cheap tickets. Today, they make their money in stadiums with high ticket prices, especially since the advent of the internet and extensive pirating. Your Airplane concert in 1967 would have included all original members. A couple of them went on to form Hot Tuna which still tours. Jorma Kaukonen has a guitar camp in Pomeroy, Ohio. There's a concert hall there that holds 200 people. Worth a visit.

Nice version, bit more sweeter and refined but you're never gonna beat the Neil version. No group can ever beat the horse. And the fluent guitar solo doesn't quite work.

I disagree the gentrys version puts Neils version in the dirt. I have the original 1970 Sun lp and sounds much better in stereo!

im not sure its "edginess" that the gentrys display here. maybe its an effort to be more commercial. tthey don't make ths song their own - it's still neil young's and always will be.

In this version of the Gentrys, Jimmy Hart was the lead singer. In the earlier group, he was a back up singer.
