I'm not sure why I love this song. I'm a (former military) traveler and lived in three different cities in Texas in my youth. I loved the buffet including whole jalapenos at Luby's. I've been to many foreign countries, still not sure but think that those Texans were the most honest folks I ever met. It is very understandable to me why they would like to form their own republic. In my view, Mr. Keen has given voice to the Texan soul.

Starchief, G and R and X are the movie ratings. In other words, the theater went out of business before the current movie rating system was introduced. As he says in the next line "a screen without a picture since Giant came to town." The movie Giant was a huge hit, back in 1956.

Does anyone know exactly when this was recorded? I remember hearing REK do this in the Sons of Hermann Hall in Dallas in the late 80's. It just may have been this one. Of course, I had a lot of Shiner Bochs that night.

REK (jr) if you're ever in Aggieland for breakfast drive up to "La Familia" and see if Minnie is there. You could give her a bigger tip this time. She might not be the exact waitress but she was one of the women serving those "greasy enchiladas" at the LaSalle (Los Nortenos) back then.

One of the comments below mentioned that the porch was a ways down from the church? That is not the case. It was directly across from the church. I heard the music coming off that porch many many times, The porch, the church and even the greasy enchiladas at the LaSalle (Los Nortenos) are all gone now but this song is a very fitting tribute. p.s. My landlord at one time was A.P., Jack Boyett's brother.

It's almost impossible to not be able to identify with something in this song if you grew up in the US
