The first, original performance was an improvisation straight to tape. Every subsequent performance was a "re-creation" of that original improv. They started as improvs and became "regular" songs after the fact. This applies to everything on "Right & Natural" plus a few random others like "Jerry Lewis" and "Love In The Sand". Other improvised songs were impossible to re-create convincingly such as the three I mentioned above.

I guess I can't tell the difference..they played all my faves at SXSW a few years back,and pretty much all of "It's only right.." and they sounded just like the record. Typically, if something is improvised, it sounds different each time, otherwise they're songs, not improvisations...that was my point. Either way, I don't care. I just found out that Dennis drowned today. Sad. People throw around the word "underrated" too much, but in this case, an apt description. With all the crap these days

Yes, the version you are listening to in this video is an improvisation. All of the songs on "It's Only Right & Natural" are improvisations except the last two songs. Because they played them live the same way has nothing to do with that. In fact, there are several "popular" improvised songs The Frogs have never played live at all for those very reasons, such as "April Fools", "I'm Evil Jack" and "I'm Hungry".

I love all these bands...but to suggest these songs are purely improvised is a stretch. They played them almost identically live, which, say the Buttholes, often times did not with their stuff. Doesn't really matter, either way.

You can't be serious. As good as Ween & the Surfers are, they could never sit in a room and improvise 20 songs in a row that are all funny and musically interesting. Their inspiration comes in flashes, with a heavy dose of drugs to move things along. With the Frogs, it comes naturally all the time.
