When I was younger I also hated when someone said "you will understand when you're older" Now that I am not a teenager anymore, and I have had more experiences and mistakes to learn from.. I completely understand what the fray means.

I don't think "When you're older, you might understand," was meant to be a condescending phrase, but rather an acknowledgement of the innocence and beauty of youth, because you haven't necessarily learned the lessons that (more often than not) come from experiencing painful things. When you're older (and therefore have had more experience) you will understand (gain wisdom and be able to understand what the artist is trying to express with the emotion in his voice and subtle references)...
