I saw them sing this in Madison Square Garden in 1973. It was the most incredible thing I've ever seen. A pencil-thin spotlight appeared on the stage, with the entire place pitch black. The packed crowd was raucous from the previous acts, and it took a while for everyone to calm down in the darkness. While we heard rhythmic finger snaps. Finally there was silence, as the "Snap... Snap... Snap... Snap... " continued. Freddie Parris stepped into the thin spotlight, and crooned "I'll... be seeing you... in all... the old... familiar places... that this heart... of mine embraces... all day through.... "And the other four sang "doo doo doo doo Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah" And 16,000 people in Madison Square Garden melted. I've never experienced anything like that before or since. When the Satins finished that song, a capella, the applause was deafening. And deserved. There were a lot of great acts on the roster that night. The Five Satins owned The Garden. Over 40 years ago. I've never heard better. I've seen many concerts in all kinds of milieus. I've heard quite a few that were close (Tony Bennett, Fonteyn & Nureyev, the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, and Diana Rigg as Lady Macbeth for example). But so far, no one has floored me like the Five Satins at MSG. God bless them.
