An amazing version - Denis - you did an incredible job at 14 on this song. It's not easy to make a version as good as the original but you did it.

HUGE KILLER VERSION

Hi to all. I'm Denis.  I appreciate all the nice comments made on behalf of this record.  I sang lead on the tune.  I was 14 on the record (the group's youngest member) and wish I could have sung it better..but the final take wasn't my choice.  This is the original group from the Bronx that went on to record Coney about 8 months later.  We started with the same arrangement as the Jesters (who we copied) and whose song and version I personally loved.  Vinny Catalano, who was the A & R man, changed it to the arrangement that you hear on the record.  I loved all the Jesters stuff and, of course, the entire Paragons vs Jesters album as I'm sure many of you did as well.  I met Adam Jackson of the Jesters about 30 years after we recorded this and sang and partied with him and his Jesters group at that time.  He was a great guy and It was a great thrill for me to get to finally get to know him.  A special hello to my old friend Harvey Newmark.. a good guy from the old neighborhood and always a loyal supporter and friend of our group.  And yeah...we did lots of singing under the street lights of Lydig Ave, Pelham Parkway, the subway stations, the parks, the beaches and anywhere we could sing and draw a crowd.  Those were great times.  One of the original members, Phil Sanchez, a true brother, passed on several years ago.  RIP Phil.

I like this very nice version. WOW seems we have a few people from my old neighborhood here. I sang with a group called the Prophets all from Pelham Pkwy circa 1967 we all went to CCHS as well.

Great information, thank you. I've known John Kuse for years. Talk about a small world.. One of my best friends lives at 2180 and I spend a good amount of time there.

I grew up with all the guys in this group. Chuck Epstein lived in the next building from mine 21 60 Bx. Pk. E. Graduated with Joe Feldman from CCHS in1962. Denny lived in same bldg as Joe on Cruger Ave. Philly Sanchez had the best falscetto I have ever heard.

Yes, you are correct. Keep in mind there were two Excellents groups.. The group that did this record and Coney Island Baby, and then The Ultimates who did "I Hear A Rhapsody." When I was referring to The Excellents being from Brooklyn I was talking about The Ultimates, and not The Bronx group heard on this recording.
