So sad jimmy that republicans dont honour the catholic man/women that fought. My great great grand father K.I.A, Somme and great grandfather gased, somme. Both sides, catholic and protestant fought and died together in the hope we could live together.

3 great grandfathers all catholics, all from the Falls Rd paid the ultimate sacrifice 2 in France in 1916 and 1 at Suvla Bay in 1915 all 3 had young families and yet they went theyfought and they died for the belief that after the war the English would allow us to be free. Shame England Shame. These men and countless others paid the price for their belief that England would honour their dept to the Irish people.

son of ulster

the reason ulster lost so many good brave men that day was.. the 36th were the only regiment that day to reach its objective. as those men pushed forward the heavy artillery pummeled the german trenches and we hit them hard... there was a village another english regiment had to clear... they didnt achieve that objective and those guns in the village took out our men.

War is hell. It is better to drink beer together than to fight!

my great-grandfather lost his right arm in this battle. He was a lieutenant in an infantry devision under General Erich von Falkenhayn. I remember him when i met him as a small boy more than 20 years ago.

Hellenbright. These are based on two pipe tunes. The first is the Battle of the Somme written by Pipe Major William Laurie of the 8th Argylls. The second song, Hamish Henderson's Freedom Come All Ye, is based on the pipe tune The Bloody Fields of Flanders by Pipe Major John MacLellan, also of the 8th Argylls.

I would have thought that yesterday's Britain, with its empire and aristocrats was even less worth fighting for.

Extraordinary juxtaposition - Battle of the Somme is a morris tune (the Albion Band version is on here somewhere), paired with the Freedom come all ye. But why not after all - WWI amplified the cry for Home Rule, and it's an interesting musical piece as well. Lets not forget the Irish (and Welsh and Scots) fought and died on the Somme as well as the English

My great-great grandad died in the battle of the somme, lucky for me my Grandad had been born before his Dad met his fate. My grandad fought in WW2 and survived fighting through France, Italy, Africa and Germany and is still alive today. He still has a NAZI ring that he cut of a dead Germans hand using his bayonet lol. I am the first in about 5 generations not to be in a war, I would join join the Army but I think modern day Britain is not worth fighting for, to many liars in Westminster.
