Yes, this is a political song; the references to Lord Trevelyan, transportation, Botany Bay etc. prove it. Pete St John, who wrote the song, didn’t put those references in by mistake; he put them in to make a point. I agree to some extent that it’s a pity that Ireland can’t leave that history behind, but the reason is, is that there is unfinished business between Britain and Ireland and until that business is concluded we all can’t move forward.
