The Dresden Dolls - Bad Habit

From the LP "The Dresden Dolls"

LYRICS:

"Biting keeps your words at bay

Tending to the sores that stay

Happiness is just a gash away

When i open a familiar scar

Pain goes shooting like a star

Comfort hasn't failed to follow so far...

And you might say it's self-indulgent

You might say its self-destructive

But, you see, it's more productive

Than if i were to be healthy

& pens and penknives take the blame

Crane my neck & scratch my name

But the ugly marks

Are worth the momentary gain...

When i jab a sharpened object in

Choirs of angels seem to sing

Hymns of hate in memorandum

And you might say it's self-indulgent

And you might say it's self-destructive

But, you see, it's more productive

Than if i were to be happy

And sappy songs about sex and cheating

Bland accounts of two lovers meeting

Make me want to give mankind a beating

And you might say it's self-destructive

But, you see, i'd kick the bucket

Sixty times before i'd kick the habit

And as the skin rips off i cherish the revolting thought

That even if i quit

There's not a chance in hell i'd stop

And anyone can see the signs

Mittens in the summertime

Thank you for your pity, you are too kind

And you might say its self-inflicted

But you see that's contradictive

Why on earth would anyone practice self destruction?

And pain opinions are sitcom feeding

They dont know that their minds are teething

Makes me want to give mankind a beating

I'm tried bandages and sinking

I've tried gloves and even thinking

I've tried vaseline

I've tried everything

And no-one cares if your back is bleeding

They're concerned with their hair receding

Looking back it was all maltreating

Every thought that occurred misleading

Makes me want to give myself a beating..."

Amanda Palmer used to have to wear a backbrace when she was a child. The actual brace itself would get so itchy and uncomfortable, she used to jam pens and sharp objects under the brace along the back of her neck and shoulder blades to scratch. She would scratch so much there'd always be scabs and ink stains.

I interpreted it to be about dermatillomania/trichotillomania

"Crane my neck and scratch my name" is the only line I could never understand about the entire song.

My wrists, arms, stomach, legs, thighs, and ankles have bled to this song so many times, none the less Punk-rock mixed with classical is a win win brilliant song. I'll always bleed to this song.

Really? She answered this question at her WKAP release party- and she said she used to self mutilate to become closer to a person she cared about

Self harm in many forms.

Amanda Palmer explained in an interview that she wrote this song thinking about her own "bad habit" of nail biting - but, as with most Dresden Dolls songs, the song's meaning is pretty much dependent on the individual's interpretation.

more than okay with it, actually. you can read a letter from a "concerned parent" on the dresden dolls website, and amanda's AMAZING response.

it's about picking at dead skin (specifically around the cuticles of your nails); there's a point when you're not pulling off dead skin anymore, but live skin. and then you might as well be cutting. it's a compulsive habit, but unlike cutting, it's an unconscious one so it's a tiny bit harder to quit. with that in mind, the lines make a little more sense, like "mittens in the summertim." however, amanda knows that a lot of folks listen to this as if it IS about cutting, and she's okay with that.

i literally have this bad habit, and her description of the pain "shooting like a scar" is totally accurate. the minute you reach the fresh skin and continue peeling is like having a pain orgasm, and then it's sore for the next few days. #picking
