Lesser known Doobie Brothers song from the Takin' it to the Streets album, the transition period when Michael McDonald assumed the lead singing role. This was the first time the new direction the band was taking in terms of their sound was heard. The guitars are still there but there's also piano, horns, and vocal harmonies.

The track lists Mc Donald, Patrick Simmons, and Jeff Baxter as songwriters but the song's overall concept appears to be more McDonald's own. The lyrics talk about the town of East St. Louis, Illinois, once known for its music, the town where Miles Davis and Ike and Tina Turner were from. There was apparently a Leo's Blue Note Club, the happening blues club during the town's heyday.

This was the perfect closing song of a perfect album. Still a band album, with significant contribution by Johnston ( the jamming "Turn It Loose"), Tiran Porter's haunting "For Someone Special," plenty of Simmons and Baxter presence, a cameo by Maria Muldaur, but also heralding McDonald a new and prolific talent. "Takin' It To The Streets" is one of the best and most durable albums of the 1970s.

Thanks for posting. My favorite band of all time. I love the B side stuff. And yes Michael McDonald did save this band from extinction when Tommy Johnston left the band for awhile.

I read that Jeff Baxter works for NASA now as a defense consultant and a chairman on a missile defense advisory board. He must be a pretty sharp dude! After all I think it was his initial idea to bring Michael on board with the Doobie's. In Hindsight a brilliant idea for which I'm thankful. Wow! Cool info on the song. I read somewhere that Michael McDonald hung at Leos' Blue Note Club a time or two listnin to that blue note groove first hand. Not sure if he ever performed there but it sure sounds like his kind of place to hang. I love when songwriters have the heart to share an experience with you through a song and this is certainly accomplished with this tune. I love it! and the song ending seems to take you right through the door to Leo's Blue Note Club. It has a way of leaving you thinking about the song and the experience long after it ends! Genius! Thanks for another wonderful share!
