This is one of those long ago songs that used to be sung after church particulary at the church picnic. Way Down Upon the Swanee river, O Susanna, Silver Slippers and the Red River Valley were other traditional american folk songs at the time that were sung in harmony by one and all. I was surprized to have heard this cover by the Crew-Cuts who weren't so much rock and roll artists but leftovers from another era of goodtime music..hello Rosemary Clooney & Doris Day, your're not alone!

I didn't realise this song had been recorded by so many different American artists. I recall it winning a song competition in the U.K. just after WW2. The competition was called "Write a song for One thousand pounds (sterling).' It must have made the writers many more thousands
