Because this style of music didn't exist until Meshuggah put out Nothing. Does it sound like Meshuggah? Not really, but you can hear the influence.

Good point but rush was and still is a band that influences alot of people. What about Genesis and Emmerson, Lake And Palmer, they had a huge part in old english prog rock. Rush did big things for prog rock I mean 2112 and Hemispheres are ya kid din me classic albums.

Technically every Prog band copy's band's like rush, yes, dream theatre. Rush took elements of yes and mixed them with hard rock DT mixed with rush and made prog metal huge and without Dream there would be no Meshuggah who originated Djent. Bands like Periphery and The contortionist take inluence from meshuggah. I get more of a Between The Buried And Me vibe from The Contortionist, but theat's just me.
