My mother who worked in the mill in Belfast at a very early age sang this song. Slight difference in the word here and there but it does not change the heart of the song. Thank you. By the way she would be 112 if she was alive today!

Nobody can seriously take issue with Sinead and the Chieftains; they're just too good. And this is a stunning rendition of a classic folk tune. But frankly, I preferred the version done by the Roches on their "Nurds" album. The Roches do it in a major key, and their harmonies make the song just as haunting as ever, but without the despairing undertone this version gives it. (And to be sure, one isn't "better" than the other; it's just a matter of taste.) And Mark Phelan, I don't think you need to worry about who's going to keep these songs alive. I've discovered bands from the 70s and 80s that nobody had ever heard of, who suddenly started getting a lot of play on YouTube. I'm also a fan of ballads and traditionals from the nineteenth century that are now being adapted by modern musicians. Bluegrass is espcecially great in this regard. You just HAVE to watch the video of Sleepy Man Banjo Boys (three brothers from New Jersey aged nine to fourteen) announcing, "This next song was written by Flatt and Scruggs in 1949, and it's called 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown' "; --and then they play the hell out of it. They're carrying that music straight to three new generations. Great music never dies.

On the money as always Sinead ... despair at who's going to keep these songs alive a few generations from now :-(

@ 95jjs - the uilleann piper is Pádraig Ó Maoldomhnaigh (Paddy Moloney) - he is responsible for much of the Chieftains music. A truly gifted person - no wonder the chieftains have done so well for so long. Please look him up on the internet.

Something about an Irish accent singing about hard times....you just have to love it.

Best version of this song I've heard. Sinead's a genius at emotion and getting the correct feel for any song. She cares about who she's singing about.
