Originally released under the title WAY DOWN YONDER, the Charlie Daniels Band's 1974 album captures the group at a pivotal point, just before they whittled the more eccentric edges off their sound and began to achieve real mainstream success (even though they'd scored the odd hit before). WHISKEY may not have been a commercial success, but its rough-and-ready blend of country twang and rock-&-roll energy is full of the kind of freewheeling abandon found in the best of Southern rock.
