Wikipedia:

"The Chameleons (called The Chameleons UK on some American releases) were a dream pop/post-punk band that formed in Middleton, in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England in 1981 (see 1981 in music). They consisted of singer and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarist Reg Smithies, guitarist Dave Fielding, drummer John Lever as well as keyboardists Alistair Lewthwaite and Andy Clegg. Their body of work is still critically acclaimed within the music press and influenced bands as diverse as The Smiths, Protokoll, The Comsat Angels, Puressence, Interpol, Editors."

@guyphawkes How did Burgess & Co. do in the UK, in terms of sales/recognition? In the U.S. and Canada they're practically unknown.

@pathogensmusick Actually, Mark Burgess is a HUGE U2 fan, and they had U2s producers and engineers working with them for years. He is a great guy, has malice only towards Bands like Brittany, etc. One of the most intelligent musicians I have ever met, has a very good idea behind the music business. Yeah, underrated, and a crying shame they arent as big as U2, but he loves U2 and the bunnymen, the Jesus & mary chain, etc.

Be nice folks.... we are all here liking some good tunes. It is simplistic to say that one band is better than another. Bands like Interpol and the Editors and many others surley owe credence to these guys, but hey, wouldn' t it be cool if those guys turned some of the younger kids onto these guys too....where is the love????

Bands like Interpol and Editors came about two decades after Chameleons so its not possible that Chameleons sound like them... Chameleons are the most underrated post-punk band of the eighties and should have filled the stadiums that overrated piece of shit bands like U2 filled. People that like Chameleons might like The Teardrop Explodes and Dif Juz.

I first heard "Tears" when I was about 4 or so, and it has always been one of my favorite songs! I only heard this song about a 2 years ago, and I was in a state of shock because I couldn't figure out why I hadn't heard it!

Lol XD, don't get me wrong, I haven't listened to the Strokes in months. It's just one song of theirs that I think of when I hear this. They're a decent band, but the Chameleons rate much higher for me than they do, and surely everyone else here.

re why so few hits.... because they were one the most under rated band of that time! they should have been alot more famous than they were. Sadly or maybe good for some of us.. they remained underground.. Shame...I LOVE THEM!

My GOD, this is such a great song. You know, every time I hear a song by The Chameleons that I haven't heard before, I start to freak out a little. They're just so good I can hardly stand it sometimes.
