This isn't a demo, its an alternate version from the Candy-O sessions without the backing vocal and lead guitar overdubs.

This Ur version isn't quite as haunted with the sorrows of pining away as the production version, but it's sure great.

Yes, one of the best songs off a great album. I drove limos during 1981 to 1985 and one time I was parked in front of the Roxy. The cars weren't playing there that night but Ric Ocasek stepped out front alone for some air or a smoke. He glanced over to me and my caddy and I pointed to him as if I recognized him and he nodded back. Seemed like a cool dude. just something you don't forget.

Back to 1979: for me. Man those were the days. Summer time, windows down in the Red 71 Corvette. Simple times , we were oblivious to the the world. Thanks Cars, you made this life better

this is from a bootleg...it used to be available on one of the infamous file share sites. all I know is that "monitor mixes" was in the title. yes, it's the basic CANDY-O tracks but with different lead vocals, less overdubs ect....hope you can find it.

Ocasek and Orr had been working together for years when the Cars were signed, including in the band Milkwood, which released a single unsuccessful album. Ocasek wrote or co-wrote all the Cars material, while Orr wrote none, and both sang on the charting singles from the band. So, no Ocasek, no Cars. But it's also fair to say that no Orr singing on various Cars hits probably a less successful band.

Without really know the facts behind it all, it just seemed to me that Ben Orr WAS the lead guy of that band and the record company saw something in Ocasek that they liked and wanted to shove forward. Again, it's just a guess and a feeling I always had about that band...I'm sure someone here can set that record straight for me

When that electric guitar comes in, whoosh - fantastic. Great track - a classic in any decade!

I think this more the actual song in an earlier state in the recording studio than a demo. the reason being on top of the backing track sounding pretty much like the final...ric writes all the songs and I'm sure his vocals are on the actual demos...and then..when they are in the studio laying the actual song down.,...then ben sings on it.

The more pop released version was better. Love the lyrics. The Cars were awesome.
