July 13th 1967. Audio-only. This the infamous performance of this song from the Tonight Show where guest host Bob Newhart infamously remarked "I think I hear them tuning up now" (not heard on the tape) to which David Crosby retorted "we tune because we care."

We are thankful that some Byrdmaniax had a tape recorder going that night.

This is the only surviving recording we assume, as the masters of this episode and the majority of the Tonight Show episodes of this era no longer exist. This recording is a precious document indeed.

The Songs performed on the show by The Byrds are Renaisance Fair, Lady Friend & Have You Seen Her Face. I found a bootleg recording today called ' Gathering Of The Tribes' AKA 'California Christmas Album' which has all three tracks, a bit rough, but listenable.

The horns were, at least in part, Crosby's idea.

Thank you kindly for recording and preserving this jem. Some joker in the CBS studio must have been using earplugs, when he dubbed those annoying horns which appear on this 8/67 single release of this song. Another major Hack job done to the Byrds, was in early '69, when they cut Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay", and went out to play gigs. Second CBS clown dubbed about thirty Church Choir singers, drowning the efforts of McGuinn to finally followup "My Back Pages", the Gosple single stiffed.

Wonderful! I remember this program, and Crosby's "We tune because we care." The song knocked me out. For a long time I was frustrated because it was so hard to find the studio recording. I have a sense that I recorded it off the TV onto a little 3" reel to reel recorder we had, but I'm not sure of that, let alone whether the tape survives. But it's great to hear this again.

@jonny1251 Sadly, the masters for all the episodes of the Tonight Show from 1961-1970(?) no longer exist. Some fragments and a partial episode exist in personal collections but that's about it.

Wow I was searching this for the longest time and this is great. So this episode doesn't exist anymore? I once heard it was on some sort of Tonight show DVD package.
