Ed Wynn's the host....right? He played Uncle Albert in Mary Poppins.

I like how the girls went crazy when the camera panned over to Gene, and then to Chris at the end.

I'm with you that vocals and all instruments are very different from the record. Vocals are possibly live. Drums - no way live. Bass - no way live.

Except that the guitar parts, though similar, are not the same as what's on the record (the intro is different, for one thing). Nor are the vocals. You can hear differences in the phrasing (for instance McGuinn's lead going up to the C a syllable or two early on "wounds cannot be nursed"). I think it really was live. Certainly the vocals were.

Man, I appreciate that you're fiercely defending McGuinn against all the BS on here, but that last statement of yours ... well, first of all, Dylan made his best work AFTER '64 (in '65-'66, to be correct!), and while "5D" is an absolute pop music masterpiece, it sure ain't no "Positively 4th Street" or "Visions Of Johanna" (just to name two). In '65-'66, Dylan along with the Beatles made the best music ever recorded!

A lot of bands recorded the performance earlier as a backing track, they only had the mics live for the show. Most TV studios only had one live sound stage, so most artists did their own backing tracks, unless they couldn't really sing, like the Spice Girls.

NOT Live. Look at the drum sticks not getting even close to the cymbals. No amps.

And who could forget Ed Wynn? What was he, chopped liver? This is my favorite Byrds song of all. I am crying, silently. The weekend before my brother went to Woodstock, I left for Vietnam...

I wore out the Byrds Greatest Hits long before I got a driver's license, and one of my fondest memories is when my college band backed up Roger at a show in New Haven a long, long time ago. Timeless music.
