Artist: The Byrds

Album: Sweetheart Of The Rodeo (1968)

Track: 1

Clouds so swift

Rain won't lift

Gate won't close

Railings froze

Get your mind off wintertime

You ain't goin nowhere

Whoo-ee ride me high

Tomorrow's the day

My bride's gonna come

Oh, Oh are we gonna fly

Down in the easy chair

I don't care

How many letters they send

Morning came and morning went

Pack up your money

Pick up your tent

You ain't goin nowhere

Whoo-ee ride me high

Tomorrow's the day

My bride's gonna come

Oh, Oh are we gonna fly

Down in the easy chair

Buy me a flute

And a gun that shoots

Tailgates and substitutes

Strap yourself

To a tree with roots

You ain't goin nowhere

Whoo-ee ride me high

Tomorrow's the day

My bride's gonna come

Oh, Oh are we gonna fly

Down in the easy chair

Now Genghis Kahn

He could not keep

All his kings

Supplied with sleep

We'll climb that hill no matter how steep

When we get up to it

Whoo-ee ride me high

Tomorrow's the day

My bride's gonna come

Oh, Oh are we gonna fly

Down in the easy chair

At :44 when Roger sings, "Pack up your money and pick up your tent", it is a "mistake". Bob Dylan's original lyrics went: "PICK up your money and PACK up your tent.

If anybody wants to hear even more of that awesome Telecaster guitar (not a steel pedal guitar) then check out Marty Stuart Show, he inherited HummingByrd (the name of the guitar) and plays it on his show almost exclusively; Marty even had Roger McGuinn on one week and they played this song and Marty made Clarence proud. The Telecaster has a "bender bridge", which is a long metal lever connected to the guitar strap knob and then to the saddle bridge; when the guitar is pushed down it creates a steel pedal guitar effect. Watch the Marty Stuart video "HummingByrd" and you will see Clarence's guitar in action. So sweet, one of the best guitars ever made.

I bought this album when it first came out. This was the only song in it that I had ever heard.

What a gorgeous song. Those wispy harmonies are perfect and are so uplifting. I wish more pop artists would understand the importance of a good vocal on a song. If you like these, you may also like The Stone Roses !

for those who are questioning, this is definitely Jim Roger McGuinn and the original Byrds - and nothing can top the originals..

On this day in 1968 {May 11th} the Byrds performed the Bob Dylan song "You Ain't Going Nowhere" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... And on that very same day it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #74 and spent 5 weeks on the Top 100... Sadly, two members of the band have left us; Gene Clark died on May 24th, 1991 at the age of 46 and Michael Clarke on December 19th, 1993 at age 47... R.I.P. Mr. Clark, Mr. Clarke, and Dick Clark {1929 - 2012}...

It's actually about Dylan being laid up after his motorcycle accident. I'm not making that up; it's Dylan's own explanation of the song. Sorry, but it has nothing to do with death row.

Seems to me this is no happy song, but a lament by someone on death row. He recalls recent events and each time tells himself "you ain't goin nowhere". He'll meet his fate tomorrow when his "bride" (the padre or warder) escorts him down to the "easy (electric) chair". Just a theory, I'll ask Bob later.
