Hmmmm, I'm a drummer and when I record a track, me and the lads go live. We're all playing with the intention of snagging a solid drum track first and if we get a great bass or guitar too, then it's a bonus. However, in different sessions I've recorded solo with no guide tracks or accompaniment, and I've also tracked drums after the other instruments have been recorded by playing along to those existing tracks. Different folk have different methods, just like Critics Confession says.

Hmm. Some bands may record over demos to make a higher quality version... My band of 12 years has already recorded demos, shared it with each other, chewed on it and figured out what should be added, removed, changed, etc, and then we eventually go into the studio and record a real "studio version". Demos have always been recorded in the garage but of course now in the house with Pro Tools.

While drums are almost always recorded first, you're flawed when you talk about "guiding tracks". It's called a demo. A band records a demo (punk band Against Me! is known to release all of their demos as separate, companion-albums to the official record) and then uses that while recording the SCRATCH TRACKS which are always recorded first. Then the instrumentalists add more over the scratch tracks. Some do one-shot scratch tracks, and some record one at a time. It's a matter of preference.

@converge66 From what I've been told, the drums were the first to be tracked during the making of this album, so Jorma Vik didn't have any bass to listen to when recording the drums. I think that makes his work all the more impressive, wouldn't you agree?

@igorsheludko There's a lot of them, I can't tell you all of them, but I believe there's also Carnival of Souls, The Mole People, Tarantula, House on Haunted Hill, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (MAYBE), The Wolfman, and The Cyclops. That's all I can remember the names of at the moment.
