Lyrics to as sung by The Bothy Band. Translation from www.celticlyricscorner.net/bothyband/casadh.htm :

Gaelic: English:

Agus rinne mise cleas... I did a trick

Ag Tigh Mhic Ui Dhomhnaill aréir... In O Domhnall's house

last night

I an tarna cleas ag teach... And a second trick

An Ósta lena thaobh... At the holstelry next door

An triú cleas ní bfhearr domh... I'd prefer not to add

A chur le mo scéal ...The third trick to my story

Is gur mhinicí domh bheith ag caitheamh... And I often

spent

An dúthracht mhaith léi... A good __ with her

A Rí na bhfeart cad do chas... Oh God Almighty

Ins a' dúiche seo mé?... What drove me to this district?

'S gur mó cailín deas a gheobhainn... When it's many a

fine lass

Im' dhúthaigín beag féin... I'd find in my own townland

Gur casadh mé isteach mar a raibh searc... I called into

the house

Agus rún geal mo chléibh... Of my own true love

Is chuir an tseanbhean amach mé... And the old

woman put me twisting rope

Ag casadh an tsúgáinín féir... 'Til I was outside the door

Curfá: Chorus (after each verse):

Má bhíonn tú liom, bí liom... If you'll be mine, be mine

A stóirín mo chroí... Oh treasure of my heart

Ma bhíonn tú liom, bí liom... If you'll be mine, be mine

Os comhair an tsaoil... Before the whole world

Ma bhíonn tú liom, bí liom... If you'll be mine, be mine

Gach orlach de do chroí... Every inch of your heart

Is é mo liom go fann nach liom... Alas that you're not

Dé Domhnaigh thú mar mhnaoí... My wife this Sunday

Tá mo cheannsa liath le bliain... My head is gray

Is ní le críonnacht é... And it's not from old age

Ní bheathaíonn na briathra... Fair words butter

Na bráithre pé sa domhan scéal é... No parsnips

anyway

Is táim i do dhiaidh le bliain... I'm after you now for a year

Is gan fáil agam ort féin... And it's useless

Is gur geall le fia mé ar sliabh... And I'm like a deer on

the moor

Go mbeadh gáir chon ina dhéidh... And the hounds

are yelping after me

Do threabfainn, d'fhuirsinn... I'd plow, I'd toil

Chuirfinn síol ins a' chré... I'd sow seed in the clay

'S do dhéanfainn obair shocair... And I'd do a steady job

Álainn, mhín, réidh... Beautiful, smooth and even each

Do chuirfinn crú fén... I'd shoe the maddest horse

Is mire shiúil riamh ar féar... Ever to walk on grass

Is ná héalaodh bean le fear... And the woman still

wouldn't elope

Ná déanfadh san féin... With a man who'd do that

A beautiful song in Irish. Not in Scottish Gaelic, better to call it Irish to avoid confusion. Amhrán álainn Gaeilge.

It's just like the singer has got nowhere to go... Of course, I don't speak Irish, so I can't say for myself, but that's the feel. :3 It's so beautiful. I bought this album on a whim to dance for some of my relatives (I'm an Irish dancer), but it's become an addiction. It's such a meaningful song, and for sure one of my favourites.

I'm in E Midlands, England. Currently there is a huge & ongoing revival of folk music in the UK and in many other parts of the world. More & more people are sick & tired of industrial grade music & the media. Gaelic music has very deep roots, is a surprisingly sophisticated & subtle culture (to yer average Sassenach). So much music, so little time.

I will check it out right now. It's late, but I can take a peak. I am jealous! That sounds wonderful! I need to see where you are located. Have a wonderful time and I know you will have LOTS of wonderful music! My best to you and thanks for the reply, Moppet

Hi, thanks for the thanks. If you care to click on my channel, then favourites, list them oldest first, you'll find plenty of excellent gaelic tracks (and others) there. So much music, so little time. (I'm treating myself to a few days at Celtic Connections, Glasgow, Jan 2013, should be EPIC.)

This is quite late to you, but I am glad you enjoyed The Bothy Band and do appreciate it that you left a comment! I am not well. I've been ill mostly since last Christmas. So...I'm always behind on everything. I tag everything so if you like The Bothy's you can type in their name on Search Channel on my Page or any genre; Celtic, Olde English, Scottish, Irish, Blues, bluegrass, mountain music, Native American, & instruments. Have fun if you play with the music! My best, Moppet

You can say that again. I have a few of those. Many Celtic ones and some others also. I really mellow out on Fiji, Chant of the Islands. Also, Ry Cooder and "Do You Want My Job". Even though that is sad, it relaxes me. Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it! I also appreciate that you looked at the lyrics. Sometimes I put a translation up, and someone asks me "What doe those words mean?" They didn't even look! Thanks for looking. :)

Even before I read the lyrics I knew this was a love song, maybe not a happy one...listening to this works better than taking a pill to make you feel mellow.

@KistoDreams It is always a treat to see you have come by! Thanks for listening and commenting. It makes my day to see that people like what they hear! I think this song is lovely. I haven't heard it before this version. I used it as a lullaby last night/this morning. It worked! My very best, Moppet
