If Smudgefizz was taken purely at face value and we assumed that The Crowes and the newer bands were on par when comparing talent I would agree with you. But I think if you read between the lines he is also saying (and if not, I am) that most of the new, commercialized bands and music in general are not only adrift with no historical reference, but they are completely devoid of any talent for playing, writing, structure, melody and generally lack aesthetic appeal. Most couldn't tune to open G.

Exquisite song. Maybe the style is familiar and old fashioned and has been done but the fact is the crowes have grown into amazing songwriters, especially on this underheard, underappreciated album. The material itself can stand with the great albums of lets say '68 to '73. Its not trailblazing but they write from the heart and the songs themselves authentic.

Im sorry sir but i fail to see what is so wrong about that? If no one ever tried or invented something new and simply built on top of the old stuff then civilisation itself would of grinded to a halt a long time ago. I say praise the young generation for saying no to the same old crap with new riffs and actually pull their fingers out their bums and try something new for once. Praise 'em!

Well said -- I think it is great the Crowes/CRB are reintroducing new generations to a different form of classic rock. These guys may be the most diverse group that has ever existed if the truth be known. Fact is, they are fortunate in the fact that today they can focus just on the music with little worries about marketing BS & money. So, they do what they want. One thing you left out (other than ABB) is their southern rock & Gram Parson country influences. They have evolved into themselves!

Of course Rich is great, I'm not denying that, but EVERYONE has influences that shape their style! Maybe you're young & don't recognize those influences in the songs. But I think it's cool when musicians like the B. Crowes keep the spirit of that older music alive, passing it on to other generations. I love hearing bits & pieces that take me back to songs from my youth. Doesn't make this music any less special. And of course Zep, the Stones, the Faces, all had THEIR influences as well, & so on..

Good post and very true. I think they''re as diverse as anybody in the makeup of their music. Blues, rock, soul, contry, bluegrass...absolutely awesome the body of work they've created. They're probably one of my top 3-4 favorite bands ever, with Beatles, ABB, Zep, Floyd...

Point made, but this is killer, and inspiration brings melody and creation. This song made me rethink the whole Crowes thing.

It's cool but sorry, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young already blazed this trail. Along with James Gang! "Tend My Gardens" go listen and you will hear how it was done in the day!

1) Besides the obvious, what's great about soulful bands like the Black Crowes is that you can hear roots & influences in their own compositions. The Steve Marriot / Rod Stewart & Faces / Rolling Stones influence is clear in many of their other tunes. But in this song I can hear a bit of Buffalo Springfield in the opening as well as Seals & Croft in the vocals; a bit of Led Zep "Ramble On", especially in the bass riff & the rest of the band towards the end; & some Allman Brothers vibe too.

2) And of course all those bands who influenced the Black Crowes reflect their own (even older) roots as well. Each generation builds on the previous, unlike the crap most kids listen to today -which hasn’t evolved from an older tradition or roots. Instead it's commercial fodder, the lowest common denominator, & smoke & mirrors. Flashing lights but no substance. You can’t trace most of today’s shit way back to gospel or blues, etc... There’s no history, no foundation they’re building on.
