US Grant said that the Confederate soldiers were the bravest he ever saw fight, but that they fought for one of the worst causes in human history...slavery. One can call it state's rights, but what did the Southern States want..a slave economy. The song is still evocative, about the hopes and dreams of Southerners who in the end were defeated and subjugated after the Civil War. It is a classic song!

hmm mixed emotions on this one..... I like the Black Crowes we partied quite a bit in high school with there music. Now The Band is one of my all time favorite and most respected bands. this isn't a bad cover. I like zac browns better then old crow medicine shows then this one probally. I feel the tempo is a little slow on this track. but to each his own definitely not a bad cover

Nice homage to The Band by Chris and his band mates, but this only goes to show you that The Band was one helluva group, and Levon Helm was on another plateau from others in singing this or any song, for that matter.

In colonial days there were a lot of white slaves as well you don't hear us bitching. Jesus, people. I like "Ride of the Valkyries," but that doesn't make me a Nazi. I enjoy Prokofiev and Shostakovich, but that doesn't make me a Stalinist. Can we just appreciate the music for what it is?

This song makes me cry a lot, but not because it is a well-written and deep tune about not being able to go home a gain and finding words for the sorrow of the loss of that place that we call "home" and of the ones that made it home. I love this song in a way that I only like a few select tunes that are part of the soundtrack of my life.I hear this song, but I see friends and family having good times, and victories of days passed that were shared with loved ones that I will never eat pizza with around a big table again, or at least until we are all in heaven, but that will most-likely be years down the road from now.I guess I am posting this to find out if anyone can relate.
