This is my favorite version of this song. I first heard it as a 13 yo in the late 80's or so, I was a Big Bette fan but from the movies, My teacher was so wonderful and loved me! Mrs. O'CONNER, she RECORDED THIS FOR ME TO TAPE FROM HER RECORD. I miss the 80's and I miss the 2 best teachers in the world! This is to you Mrs. O'Conner and Mrs. Linda!

@ricknmd, perfectly put: "I get it." I saw this live in 1976; she was astounding and brought the house down. She made the transition from bath houses/small, trashy venues, to big stage and then, big screen (The Rose, 1979) performances. By this time she'd recorded 3 LPs (and brought the tacky with her!), and was about 30 yrs old. Imho, Bette is a phenomanal actress, with in incredible voice, trapped in the body of a bawdy Broadway babe. She still swings, but this video was in her prime time.

Thanks for the post, I love this song. She starts out sounding like Tom Waits, whom I admire. The writer of this song is John Prine, and he may not have long to live. He has been battling throat problems for years, and although he has cancer , he is still touring , perhaps one more time. So if you get a chance ,maybe at a show or just at his website,take a second, stop by and say ,"Hello in there!" PEACE,LOVE and HAPPINESS TO ALL

OMG! I love you. She is AMAZING! She puts all of her emotions in it. You really feel bad for all of the lonely people out there. It also remindes you not to judge people and not to forget the old because they are the ones who made life easy for us. I can't explain it. It moves me.
