In 1988 I was working for Greenpeace in Eugene, Oregon. One night the Beatnigs' van broke down in front of our office. We went out to help them push it out of the street. Along came a coupe of police officers, who joined in helping us move the van. It was one of the strangest endeavors I was ever part of: The Beatnigs, Greenpeace and the Eugene PD all working together to push a broken-down vehicle out of the road.11 years ago
