SIDE TWO (Track 03) - written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks

Here is the official Capitol Records release of The Beach Boys' long-awaited "Smile" modified to make it sound like how it would have been in 1967.

The album is split into two sides, unlike the official release which uses three sides (which I find a waste of space and inauthentic). Enjoy!

LYRICS:

I'm gonna be round my vegetables,

I'm gonna chow down my vegetables.

I love you most of all,

My favorite vege-table.

(I'm up and about to dig a hole in the ground.)

If you brought a big brown bag of them home,

I'd jump up and down and hope you'd toss me a carrot.

I'm gonna keep well my vegetables,

Cart off and sell my vegetables.

I love you most of all,

My favorite vege-table.

I tried to kick the ball but my tenny flew right off.

I'm red as a beet 'cause I'm so embarrassed.

Sleep a lot, eat a lot, brush 'em like crazy.

Run a lot, do a lot, never be lazy.

Sleep a lot, eat a lot, brush 'em like crazy.

Run a lot, do a lot, never be lazy.

Da da da da, dada da da...

Da da da da, dada da da...

Da, doo, doo, dooby doo...

Doo, dooby doo, da...

(How do I get rid stains now off of my shirt?)

I threw away my candy bar and I ate the wrapper.

And when they told me what I did, I burst into laughter.

Sleep a lot, eat a lot, brush 'em like crazy.

Run a lot, do a lot, never be lazy.

Sleep a lot, eat a lot, brush 'em like crazy.

Run a lot, do a lot, never be lazy.

I know that you'll feel better

When you send us in

Your letter and

Tell us the name of your...

Your favorite vege-table.

What a genius. It's like being a dream that you never want to end. The fact the Smile never came to fruition before Sgt Pepper is one of saddest things in music history.

The fade out, which begins at 2:43, is one of my favorite Beach Boys harmony fragments ever!

The definitive version? I creamed when I heard this one for the first time - and I grew up with Smiley Smile on my turn table / C.D. player.

That hook that kicks in around the minute mark is pure groove. Can't stop listening.

It's not. When Brian wrote it he was insistent that the people around him eat right and exercise, even though he did not do it himself.

Am I the only one who thinks this song is about pot?

Interesting, it's pretty much the Smile Sessions version but it has a few harmonies added. It's cool how "modular" Smile was.

Must've been the inspiration for Dana Carvey's "Chopping Broccoli" song
