Dennis Wilson composed "4th of July" in the early 70s during the Vietnam War (his co-writer was Beach Boys manager Jack Rieley). Carl Wilson sang the song. It was supposed to be included on the "Surf's Up" album, but was withdrawn after a disagreement among the band members. Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983. "4th of July" was finally released as part of the "Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of the Beach Boys" box set ten years later. Carl Wilson died in 1998.

Note: Unlike most Beach Boys songs, this one has only been officially released once. That was on the 1993 "Good Vibrations" box set, which is no longer being manufactured or sold by Capitol Records. The song does not appear on the upcoming "Made in California" box set.

This is a song that's not widely known, even among some Beach Boys fans, but it's one of my favorites. It just happens to also fit with the occasion. Goodnight my g+ family.

I will always love this group. I've owned all their albums, seen them live a few times (with Dennis and Carl). There's something great in all of their albums. Surf's Up and Til I Die are my all time favorite Brian songs!

Incredible song. I can't believe any of the boys would be okay with this and wouldn't it be nice to live again not being included on "Surfs Up". It makes me really angry at them.

If Mr Love was involved it would have been about money, not artistic merit.

Freedom of speech to complain but not free to correct the problems. Just a mass of pawns locked away thinking they are free.

Not a fan, but probably because I'm British - it just seems too preachy for me.

Not remotely one of my favorite BB tunes. Would rather have "...Feet" on the Surf's Up LP than this. A little too dramatic and plodding for me.
