Clear influences cited above, Simon, Knopfler, and I'll add Cat Stevens since they drop references to him in a number of their songs including this, and I definitely hear some upper register Cat in the lead vocal. Maybe when he gets some years behind him, umpteen cartons of Camels, and just keeps working on it, the lead vocal will acquire the Cat's lower register growl/purr. Can't fairly say if they have melodies quite as memorable as from those cited because I haven't listened to their whole repertoire.10 years ago
