In a Jan. 2015 interview for Rock Cellar Magazine, Susanna says this song first had an early incarnation as a collaboration between her & guitarist David Roback when they were making cassette recordings together, pre-1981, before the Bangles (formed Dec., 1980), & before David's band Rain Parade (Roback later went on to form Opal & Mazzy Star). QUOTE: "I had recordings [made with David] of me singing Velvet Underground songs and our song Bitchin’ Summer, which was originally called Speedway, was a surf instrumental."

Back when the Bangles were truly a band and not just primarily a showcase for Susanna Hoffs. Their heroes were equal parts Beatles and 60's garage bands like the Seeds and the La-De-Das, and they ROCKED. Miles away from, and much better than, the heavily commercialized package that they became. Here they channel their inner Dick Dale / Torquays and come up with a surf instrumental winner. Saw them play this at the Roxy Theatre in '82. Killer.
