I am going on record as saying this song is perfect

Clear evidence that they broke up a bit too late. How one gets from Tears of Rage and Chest Fever to schmaltzy soft rock is beyond me.

got a lot of airplay in the spring and summer of 1978. love it.

I'm just wondering if this is the same version of the track they used in The Last Waltz ~ always thought it was Rick who sang it

A haunting song. There is something from the heart here, which is indefinable. A truly wonderful track.

You sheeple need to learn to think (or rather listen) for yourselves instead of regurgitating what you've heard others say. Robbie sounds incredible on this song. One of the Band's greatest vocal performances even (and that's saying a lot).

For what it's worth, this is probably the best vocal performance of Robbie's life. Ever heard his solo albums? Yeeeesh.

Ouch! He should have let Richard sing this

Love the tune. Robbie does as good as he can. BUT!!! Listen close. I've used this song as a lesson in teamwork. No way Robbie pulls this off without great help - Rick Danko shadows Robbie throughout, adding a fullness to his voice, almost a vibrations. More important, there are parts Robbie simply just can''t pull off, For these few words, mostly towards the end of the song, Robbie stops singing, Rick continues seamlessly, stops singing for only a second only once Robbie can pick up again, Utter genius, utter teamwork, total selflessness on Rick's part.

Because he became a opportunistic business man out for promoting his own efforts or as Levon says in his book (Robbie was in bed with the suits), all this has nothing to do with writing a good song or being talented You can write a song that brings people to tears and still be a prick business wise!, You will notice though that Robbie's solo efforts did not make him a star , he is relegated to writing an occasional score for a movie.

Very intelligent comment, Bill. You're right, we don't know who contributed what. Therefore forming an opinion on the subject given our lack of factual information seems ludicrous. And my guess is it's Richard singing with Robbie on this one. Robbie kills on this song. I wish he'd sang more.

That's part of "The Last Waltz Suite" score for the album composed by Robbie Robertson.

I can hear a Rick Danko's singing influence, and also a little Richard Manual in there too. One of those two does unison with Robbie on the 2nd and 3rd chorus. Robbie did a great job. By the way he handles the vocal it's evident he was definitely the main song writer. But the way it works is - if someone adds something significant then it is fair to say they co-wrote. We weren't there - WE DON'T KNOW
