Sounds like Radiohead going into jazz, alcohol and extremely psychedelic drugs. I like it!I first heard this version in my Music Appreciation class, a few years ago, and still it produces me goosebumps out of the thrill.

At the risk of seeming pedantic, this is not a cover, it is an interpretation. A cover was when record companies would compete to put out lesser versions of well known artist`s work in order to get a share of the market. That`s where the term "cover" gets its negative connotation.

Pretty much. Listen to Coltrane's Ascension for a perfect example of pure jazz. That'll give you an idea about the lack of respect free jazz players have for any conventional music rules.

so would they be free to play changes if they chose to and see who follows, and play in time, and then also free to break away completely from changes as well as rhythmic structure?

You can bet that right after this I'm listening to Karma Police by Radiohead.

The Bad Plus plays to sold-out clubs nearly 200 nights a year. What are you doing with your life? Probably not traveling the world for a straight decade on the dime of your own talent and creativity. Go watch N*SYNC videos.

Everyone doing whatever the fuck they feel like doing is what free jazz is. No set rhythm, no set changes, nothing is set in advance. Everyone is just jamming around.

How is free jazz defined exactly? They are following changes in this but it is rhythmically free/loose in places without a doubt

I absolutely love that double bass.

This hardly is free jazz. There's a very distinct pattern they're all following. At times it might get a tad chaotic, but that qualifies it more as some form of avant-garde jazz than free jazz. If you want to hear actual free jazz try listening to Coltrane's Ascension or Peter Brötzmann's Machine Gun.
