It's about death...The entire album is. I don't think the manner of it much matters.

Gonna have to pretend that this video doesnt exist. The song gives me so much stimulus and this vid doesn't seem to add to it

I have a feeling this song is less about an abortion and more about the death of what the caretaker loves. After all, don't you think a song about an abortion in the middle of an album like this would be out of context? It certainly conveys death, but maybe instead it conveys the death of a chance to make a working relationship.

There's a bear inside your stomachThe cub's been kicking from withinHe's loud, though without vocal chordsWe'll put an end to himWe'll make all the right appointmentsNo one ever has to knowAnd then tomorrow I'll turn 21We'll script another showWe'll play charades up in the ChelseaDrink champagne although you shouldn't beWe'll be blind and dumb until we fall asleepNone of our friends will comeThey dodge our callsAnd they have for quite a while nowIt's not a shockYou don't seem to mind and I just can't see howWe're too oldWe're not old, old at allJust too oldWe're not old, old at allThere's a bear inside your stomachThe cub's been kicking you for weeksAnd if this isn't all a dreamWell then we'll cut him from beneathWell we're not scared of making cavesOr finding food for him to eatWe're terrified of one anotherAnd terrified of what that meansBut we'll make only quick decisionsAnd you'll just keep my in the waiting roomAnd all the while I'll know we're fuckedAnd not getting unfucked soonWhen we get home we're bigger strangers than we've ever been beforeYou sit in front of snowy television, suitcase on the floor

Instead of acting like you know what the album is about, why not look up what Peter actually says about the album? He was never a hospice worker. The caregiver and cancer patient relationship is a metaphor for a psychologically and emotionally abusive relationship. This song tells the story of an unplanned pregnancy with his girlfriend and the guilt and emotional toll it took on him and their relationship. Keep your politics out of this song, it's not a pro life or prochoice song. It's simply about the devastating reality that this couple could easily afford to have a family together but neither are mentally or emotionally healthy to bring up this child. However the lyrics don't have to be taken literally and the bear inside her stomach could signify their relationship and the abortion or end of their relationship. This fits better in context with the rest of the album especially since Shiva (the sequel to this song) tells the point of view of a baby being aborted and the pain of separation. In this case, Peter is the one left behind, alone.

The whole album is a trainwreck. It's amazing and beautiful and there's nothing like it, but it's not something you actually enjoy. It's probably just a personal preference, but to me it's a bit too hard hitting to handle on a daily basis. I do come back to it when the mood strikes me and I'm glad I have it in my life.

No, it's not, the whole album is metaphorical, have you listened to it? This song, i guess, talks about when they (hospice worker & patient) realize the relationship they started is not going well, (the Bear is a metaphor for it, something they had to put a lot of effort on to keep and is a little too big for them) so they are scared and decide to... some kind of "end" it, (abort the bear) but the feelings remain even though the patient keeps him a little far... It makes sense with the lyrics c:
