Charted at #5 on Billboard in August 1957. Competing version of the Debbie Reynolds hit which charted at #1. Original Billboard review: "From the film "Tammy and the Bachelor", comes this cover of the title tune. Pat Kirby has the original but this slow, rock and roll backed version of the ballad can compete well." Written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans. The other side of the single is "Rockin' Shoes".

Many comments on this great record. My hometown radio station played this every day in June/July 1957. I didn't realize there was a Debbie Reynolds version until many years later. (This almost sounds like stereo- is that possible?)

The music of the 50's ah yes, like in the movies too, the tune and lyrics were the thing not the performer, it made everything grounded. Unfortunately now it's Bieber, Lady GaGa, JoLo, et al not the writers.

Love this version too. Hard to compare a doo wop song with Debbie's version. Completely different and great in two completely different ways.

I did not know that The Ames Brothers had recorded this song untill recently. I have always loved this song by Debbie Reynolds. After recently hearing versions by Sam Cooke and Jimmie Rodgers I decided to attempt it myself. It turned out to be harder to sing than I thought. Of course mine is not nearly as good as these wonderful singers but stop by my channel sometime if you are interest in amature singers. I have a lot of 50's and 60's pop and country song covers posted there........Terry

On this day in 1957 {June 10th} the Ames Brothers' "Tammy" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #29 and spent 24 weeks in the Top 100... About six weeks later on July 22nd Debbie Reynolds' version of "Tammy" entered Billboard's Top 100 and on September 2nd it reached #1 {for 5 weeks} and stayed in the Top 100 for over a half-year {31 weeks}... The song was nominated for the Academy Award but lost to "All The Way" from the movie "The Joker Is Wild"...

Just like our old music is so beautiful, it kept marriages together with the same quality of matureness. People actually fell in love with each other before they fell into bed. Love means putting the other person first. It just doesen't happen anymore. It's self or sex first, and last. Just look at what is taken for normal now. K.J.

I love it when a romantic song about a woman is sung by men with manly voices and not boyish voices! Thanks for sharing this!

@lskarin I mostly agree. But there are exceptions. Otis Reddings version of "White Christmas" is my favorite. (And to be a bit of a geek, he originally did "Respect", and Aretha made that song her own. There are others, but I won't bore. Just had to add my .02.

The Ames brothers harmonize like only siblings can harmonize -- these guys have always been a class act, And, I remember when they were popular.

@emeraldseagull That's right. I grew up with this music as a result of growing up with my grandparents. The older generation needs to instill better music taste in the young.
